Wek 3 - Task 1 - Identity

Many people feel more comfortable talking to someone over the internet as they feel they can express themselves much more as you dont have to talk to someone face to face. This is how paedophilia has become so much of a problem in recent years. With the continued advancement of technology such as the internet, it has become easier for people to talk to complete strangers. You cant see the person you are actually talking to and therefore if you dont know them it is very easy to put on "mask". If you dont necessarily like something about yourself, eg the colour of your hair, you can easily make it up and no one would be any of the wiser. This is why some men can easily pretend to be other young girls or boys in order to befriend children and take advantage.

Will continued advancement in technology make it so such paedophillia can become more uncontrollable?

there's loads of like software for parents to monitor what their kids access on the internet, but at what point do they drop the safety net? I don't agree with this kind of spying software. Becuase I do see it as spying and although parents have the right to want to protect their kids, the kids also have the right to make their own decisions.
I think as long as children are aware of all the dangers of open chat rooms and encourged to be honest with their parents about who they talk to and what they talk about, it could be less of a threat. Do you agree sazza bean?

Yes they should be encouraged to be responsible and therefore be able to be trusted but young children are naive and can easily be manipulated. They may be visiting a friends house or a family member who doesnt have such software where they are then able to use the internet as freely as possible.

Having said this i think people are now more aware of the dangers such chatrooms produce and therefore parents are alot more wary when it comes to letting their children play freely with computers. The only way these sort of dangers will be prevented is if chat rooms were to close. Although chat rooms arent really a necessity i cant see that they will ever disappear in the near future.

Sarah,

Your comments here have produced a lively discussion which is really good. I think you're right to be concerned about the dangers of identity on the Internet. I'm not a parent, but if I were, I think I would be keen to implement any software to ensure my children were as safe as possible using the Internet.

All the best
